Some like to color their hair to hide their gray hair, others like to match their braids to their mood or clothes. There is always a good reason to color your hair. But after choosing their favorite shade, some women end up complaining of dry hair, falling out or dullness. There is also the problem of rapid fading of hair color. You only have to blame yourself for these hair problems. Colored hair needs lots of love and care. To maintain your colored hair, you must follow a suitable hair care routine.
To help you with tips on caring for colored hair, Health Shots got in touch with Dr. Blossom Kochhar, Chairman of the Blossom Kochhar Group of Companies.
Common mistakes after hair coloring
Some women make mistakes when it comes to colored hair. Here are a few:
1. Overwashing
Washing colored hair too frequently can strip the color of natural oils, leading to premature fading, says Dr. Kochhar. So don’t wash your hair every day.
2. Use hot water
The hot water opens the hair cuticles, causing the color molecules to slide off. Opt for cold water to seal the cuticles and set the color.
3. Skip thermal protection
Heat styling tools can be a great way to achieve a chic look, but they can damage colored hair, causing color fading to accelerate.
4. Use products containing sulfates
Sulphates in shampoos can strip color as well as moisture from colored hair. Replace with sulfate-free products to maintain color longevity.

Tips for caring for colored hair at home
You can always go to a salon to pamper your colored hair, but you should also take care of your hair at home. Here’s what you can do:
1. Use a color-protecting shampoo and conditioner
Use a shampoo and conditioner specially formulated for colored hair. These products can help lock in color and prevent fading, the expert says.

2. Apply leave-in conditioner and hair masks
Nourish your colored hair regularly with conditioners and leave-in hair masks. These hair treatments provide deep hydration, repair damaged strands and ensure that your hair color stays intact for a long time.
3. Protect hair from heat styling
Thermal styling tools like straighteners and curling irons can damage colored hair, causing the color to fade and dry out. If you must use heat styling for a party, apply a heat protectant spray before styling to minimize damage.
4. Avoid chlorinated water
Swimming in a pool is a great way to beat the heat. But the chlorine found in swimming pools can cause bleaching and fading of colored hair. Before swimming, wet your hair with clean water and wear a swimming cap to minimize exposure to chlorine, suggests the expert. Also protect your hair from the sun’s UV rays by wearing hats or using hair products with UV filters. The powerful rays can take away the shine and vibrancy from your hair color.
5. Oil your colored hair
Oiling can be beneficial for color-treated hair because it helps lock in moisture, add shine and nourish the hair shaft, says Dr. Kochhar. Colored hair can be prone to frizz and flyaways due to some damage caused by the coloring process. Use olive oil which can tame frizz and smooth hair, making it easier to comb.
Once you correct your mistakes and follow a hair care routine for colored hair, you will have no complaints.
