Situationship: what it is, signs and impact on mental health

These days, being in a romantic relationship doesn’t always mean being seriously in love. It doesn’t even require a label! Some may find themselves in a situation – which is not exactly the same as friends on benefits or a serious relationship. You need to know the signs of a situation if you have doubts about the “situation” with your partner.

To find out more about the situation, Health Shots reached out to psychotherapist, life and business coach Dr. Chandni Tugnait.

What is a situation?

A situation is a term for the stage in a relationship where the partners are neither seriously in love with each other, nor just a couple, Dr. Tugnait explains. It is about a relationship between two people who are not officially in a romantic relationship, but nevertheless have feelings for each other. This type of relationship involves an emotional connection without an official label.

There may be some similarities to relationships between friends with benefits, but the two are not the same thing. When it comes to friends with benefits, it’s more about friends having casual sex. As for the situation, it is an ambiguous and not so clearly defined status between the single and the taken, says the expert.

Situationality and mental health

A person’s mental health is influenced by all the relationships they have. A situation has positive and negative sides, like any potential relationship.

Being in a situation can give you the freedom to continue seeing the person you want, but without having to make any serious promises or commitments. It can also work as a fun, in-between stage, where a couple can be free from responsibility for each other and have the space and time to think about the future without any pressure. When things are going in a positive exploration direction, a person’s mental health also stays in this positive spectrum, allowing them to have a good balance in life without feeling a lot of pressure and being in a state of peace. satisfied mind.

However, the uncertainty surrounding the status and future of the relationship can cause feelings of anxiety and unease, leading to potential distress, says Dr. Tugnait. People can struggle with low self-esteem and question their self-worth when faced with the lack of formal commitment. The lack of clear boundaries and expectations can hinder effective communication, exacerbating feelings of isolation, jealousy, and loneliness.

Signs that you are in a situation

Some common signs indicate that you are in a situation. Here are a few:

1. Uncertain Relationship Status

Not being sure about the status of your relationship is one of the most glaring indications of a situation. Although they spend time together, are intimate with each other and express their emotions, neither party has formally classified their relationship as exclusive or committed.

2. Limited emotional connection

Although there may be some emotional closeness in a situation, it is usually less intense than in a committed situation. Sharing more intense feelings or talking about the future together could cause reluctance or hesitation, notes the expert.

3. Not enough time together

Meetings may not be regular and arrangements may be made intermittently or at the last minute.

4. Lack of plans for the future

In one situation, conversations about the future of the relationship may be blurred or avoided altogether. The parties involved may be reluctant to form alliances or long-term plans.

5. Minimal Social Interaction

Unlike a formal partnership, friends and relatives may not recognize people in a situation as a couple. The couple can keep their relationship mostly hidden from others and refrain from any public displays of devotion.

6. No effort to define the relationship

In a situation, neither party usually makes an effort to clarify the nature of the relationship or discuss its future development. This uncertainty can cause frustration and confusion for both parties involved.

7. Avoid major discussions

Discussing issues or disagreements about the relationship can be complex in any given situation. Lack of engagement can cause people to feel uncomfortable when discussing difficulties, which can lead to unresolved issues.

If you find yourself in a difficult situation, it is essential to recognize these signs because they can affect your emotional well-being. Communication is key if you want a more committed relationship.
